Omaha police officer seriously injured in crash near 50th, L after SUV hits cruiser

An Omaha police officer was seriously injured Thursday when a sport-utility vehicle slammed into a stopped police cruiser.

The force of the collision at 50th and L Streets pushed the cruiser into a garbage truck and pinned Officer Louis Tomsu, Sgt. Joseph Collins said.

Tomsu, 46, suffered rib fractures and a cut on the back of his head. He was taken to Creighton University Medical Center and admitted to the intensive care unit.

Tomsu's injuries were not believed to be life threatening, Collins said.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

The collision occurred about 2 p.m. as Tomsu's cruiser, a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria, was parked behind an accident that had occurred earlier between a tow truck attached to a garbage truck and a second garbage truck, Collins said.

The cruiser was facing west, just east of 50th and L Streets, blocking traffic with its rotating lights on, Collins said.

A westbound 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Michele Eshelman, 39, of Omaha collided with the rear of the cruiser and pushed it into the towed garbage truck, Collins said.

Collins said the investigation was incomplete. He did not say if Eshelman was ticketed.
