Gretna school board member Kevin Svec has filed his paperwork for re-election in this fall’s election.
Svec sits on one of three seats that will be up for election in the fall.
Svec, a first vice president at American National Bank, is finishing his first term on the school board.
“It takes a couple years to really understand the process,” he said. “It’s a great school district, and I feel there’s additional value I can add with my knowledge in finance.”
The Gretna school board is a nonpartisan race with three at-large seats available.
Svec said he sees a lot of crucial decisions on the horizon for the board.
“A lot of big decisions will need to be made in the next four years,” he said, especially when it comes to expansion. “That’s something we’re going to be dealing with if you look between here and Omaha with all the lots and developments coming on line.”
Svec has lived in Gretna for 17 years and has been involved with school bond issues before getting on the board.
He says he likes the group leading GPS right now.
“We work very effectively as a group,” he said. “Working with the Learning Community has created some challenges, which is still an ongoing topic. It takes a little bit to keep a budget and maintain an effective school system.
