Creighton University is in a battle of the birds.
In a fundraising competition dubbed the Battle of the Beaks, the three Big East schools with bird mascots will see which one can have the highest level of participation in a three-week campaign, which begins today and is targeted at each school's undergraduate students and alumni.
Other schools in the challenge are the Marquette Golden Eagles and St. John's Red Storm. St. John's uses a red thunderbird as its mascot.
Creighton will kick off the event at a watch party at 7 Wednesday night at the Sam & Louie's on 24th and Cuming Streets. The Creighton men's basketball team will be playing Marquette in Milwakuee at the same time, and the game will be shown on TVs.
Daily updates will be posted at battleofthebeaks.org, and final results will be announced online on the first day of the Big East Conference Tournament.
The winner of the challenge will be determined by what percentage of each school's alumni base and undergraduate enrollment participates.
“It's not the highest dollar, it's the most participation,” said Deborah Daley, director of news and digital media at Creighton University.
The competition aims to help students show pride in their university, and alumni in their alma mater, said Brian Diss, director of the Creighton Fund.
Money donated to Creighton will benefit scholarships, other financial aid, athletics and research, said Diss.
Diss and Daley said no dollar amount is too little. Anonymous donations will be accepted but will not count in the challenge.
Any alumni who give and are located in New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., or Milwaukee will be entered in a drawing for a Creighton blanket.
“It's important to get in the spirit to give back to your university,” Daley said.
