The Nebraska National Guard’s announcement that it plans to convert an old armory in Seward, Neb., into a museum is certainly worth a salute.
The State Arsenal Museum at the old state fairgrounds is being vacated, making way for the University of Nebraska’s new Innovation Campus.
The new museum will be much more than a warehouse for the extensive array of artifacts, which date to territorial times. It will be able to display items year-round, and it enables exhibits to be changed from time to time, with emphasis placed on anniversaries of historical events.
From the days of volunteers forming militia companies for territorial defense to the thousands who have performed courageously in Iraq and Afghanistan, Nebraska’s citizen-soldiers have been making history.
It’s good to have a place to tell their stories.
