Strong shooting lifts Mavs over Jaguars

INDIANAPOLIS — Outstanding 3-point shooting sparked the UNO men’s basketball team to a 99-71 win at IUPUI on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks are now 13-9 (3-4 Summit League) after the first half of conference play, while the Jaguars drop to 5-19 (0-7 Summit League).

Ten of UNO’s 11 players contributed in a balanced scoring attack, led by six Mavs in double figures. Sophomore Devin Patterson finished with a team-high 15 points with three 3-pointers, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, followed by 14 points from senior center John Karhoff. Senior guard Justin Simmons added 13 points, eight boards, four assists and two steals, and junior guard CJ Carter totaled 12 points with four steals and six assists.

Senior guard Alex Phillips added another 12 points, and sophomore guard Marcus Tyus had 13. Junior forward Mike Rostampour narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.

IUPUI was led by Elijah Ray’s 19 points and another 14 from Mitch Patton. Marcellus Barksdale notched six points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

UNO shot 55 percent (38 of 69) as a team and 52 percent (12 of 23) from 3-point range, tying its season best for 3s made in a game previously set against Waldorf on Dec. 3. IUPUI shot 48 percent (29 of 60) overall and 14 percent (2 of 14) beyond the arc.

In the first half, UNO shot 68 percent, going 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Helped by identical 5-of-6 efforts from Karhoff and Patterson, including three 3-pointers from Patterson, the Mavericks surged to a 55-36 halftime lead.

UNO took its largest advantage of the game at 7:23 in the second half, going up 92-58 on a 3-pointer by Phillips.

The Mavs return to action Wednesday, hosting in-state foe Peru State at 11 a.m.
