Green stays unbeaten as Huskers edge Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Eighth-ranked Nebraska improved to 11-1 in duals this season as the Huskers earned a 22-13 victory over No. 17 Illinois on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska won four of the dual’s first five matches to build a 15-4 lead. Illinois pulled within 18-13 entering the final match, but freshman Colton McCrystal secured NU’s win by earning a 12-3 major decision over John Fahy at 141 pounds.

James Green, ranked No. 1 at 157, remained unbeaten as he decisioned 13th-ranked Zac Brunson 10-3. At 174, Robert Kokesh moved his season record to 27-1 with an 18-2 win over Tony Dallago. It was Kokesh’s 95th career win as a Husker.

At 149, NU’s Jake Sueflohn had to rally to win his 12th straight match. Sueflohn trailed 3-1 after two periods before getting a takedown and tacking on a riding time point for a 4-3 win over Caleb Ervin.

Illinois got a win in the only head-to-head matchup of top 10 opponents as No. 3 Jesse Delgado, the defending national champion at 125 pounds, edged No. 9 Tim Lambert 3-1 in overtime. Six of Lambert’s seven losses this season have been by two points or less.

Nebraska returns to action Friday against Michigan in the Huskers’ final home date of the season.
