Nebraska couple gets engaged with an assist from Husker coach Tim Miles

When Joe Haack found out that Theresa Conradt followed Nebraska coach Tim Miles on Twitter, he knew it was a match made in basketball heaven.

It was on their first date in November 2012. He was a long-suffering Husker fan from back in his middle school years. She liked Miles' enthusiasm and thought his tweets were hysterical.

“We had an on and off joke that I knew right away that she was the one,” Haack said.

Two years later, when the 32-year-old Haack was ready to propose, it seemed only natural to include Miles.

Haack, who works in advertising in Lincoln, contacted Miles via Twitter before the Huskers played at Purdue early in January, thinking the coach might have a few minutes on the plane trip. Miles responded right away, they exchanged a few emails, and a few days later Haack had a video.

“I was pretty excited. I think I was about as excited that he made the video as I was hoping she would be for the question,” he said. “I was pretty pumped.”

In the video, Miles said he heard that Conradt was a fan and thanked her for her support. He mentioned their first date and said Haack was going to be asking her a question.

And that's what Haack did Tuesday night, when he recreated their first date. He told Conradt he had a video to show her, and then went down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

“Of course I said yes,” said Conradt, a former basketball player at Carroll Kuemper and O'Neill St. Mary who now teaches second grade at Elliott Elementary in Lincoln.

Conradt, 29, at first thought it was a canned video, in which you can insert any name. Even after she said yes, she had to watch it again, so that it could sink in that it was really a personal video from Miles.

“She told me she was a little speechless,” Haack said. “She didn't know what to make of it.”

Haack, a season ticket holder, posted the video on Twitter for his friends. He thanked Miles for helping him get a commitment from a recruit he'd been chasing for a while.

Someone at Nebraska retweeted the video and it started to spread on social media. They even got a response from the coach, saying “congrats to the both of you.”

They plan to meet him for the first time Friday when they're interviewed by a local television station.

“Everyone is saying how great coach Miles is,” Haack said.

Once the excitement dies down, they'll start planning their wedding. And no, it won't be at halftime of a Husker game.

“Maybe this fall or next spring,” Haack said. “The details are still TBD.”
