Good news, Omaha travelers: You can now apply for TSA PreCheck

Travelers can now apply to be eligible for the Transportation Security Administration’s expedited airport screening program in Omaha.

The PreCheck program allows for approved passengers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt in select screening lanes. Passengers also can keep their laptops in cases and leave liquids in their bags.

Previously, passengers were eligible for PreCheck only through the U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s Global Entry program and frequent flier programs with participating airlines. In October, the TSA expanded the program and began randomly selecting passengers to be eligible for PreCheck based on information they provide when making flight reservations.

Eppley Airfield’s designated PreCheck lane became available in October in the airport’s south terminal.

The application process now allows for U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to go through a pre-enrollment process online at TSA.gov, then visit an application center to provide information such as name, date of birth, address, fingerprints, payment and proof of citizenship or immigration status. The Omaha enrollment center is at 11717 Burt St., Suite 101.

The TSA is in the process of increasing the enrollment centers to more than 300 locations.

“We are pleased that residents of Omaha and surrounding communities can now visit a local enrollment center to apply for expedited screening benefits,” TSA Nebraska federal security director Paul Ross said in a statement.

Interested travelers can begin the application process online by visiting universalenroll.dhs.gov and selecting “Pre-Enroll Now” in the TSA PreCheck section. When prompted, applicants should select Omaha from the enrollment location list.

Once the application has been approved, applicants can visit the enrollment center in person to verify their identity and citizenship or immigration status, as well as to provide fingerprints. While walk-ins are accepted, appointments are recommended and can be booked online. There is a nonrefundable application fee of $85 for a five-year membership. Approved passengers will then receive a Known Traveler Number that can be used when making airline reservations — the number will arrive in the mail within two to three weeks or can be accessed online after five business days.

No individual is guaranteed expedited screening as the TSA continues to incorporate random and unpredictable security searches.
