Slow start dooms Panthers against Aurora

GENEVA – The Fillmore Central Panthers had a tough time getting started on Tuesday night and the Aurora Huskies took advantage.

Aurora jumped to a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and that early cushion held up as the Huskies defeated the host Panthers 56-43 in girls non-conference action.

Aurora extended its lead to 25-15 at the break and pushed the margin to double digits with an 18-15 scoring advantage in the third.

Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Panthers saw their season record dip to 8-8 with the loss.

Panthers senior Rachel Hoarty was the FC girls bright spot as she poured in 21 points and Emilie Krienert added nine.

The Panthers committed 29 turnovers.

“Our 29 turnovers was a huge factor in the game and it limited the number of shots we could take,” said FC head coach Christin Lovegrove. “Our half court offense was effective, but it’s hard to win games with that many turnovers. The girls responded well after halftime, but we were not able to overcome our slow start in the first half.”

No individual scoring was available for the Aurora Huskies who improved their record to 6-7 with the win.

FC (8-8) will travel to Tri-County High School Friday night to take on the Trojans in SNC action.
