Kiewit Corp. of Omaha ranked No. 99 on Fortune magazine's 2014 list of the 100 best companies to work for.
The list, published today, says the employee-owned construction and mining company has 20,989 employees and annual revenue of $11.2 billion.
“The employees who tackle Kiewit's massive construction projects enjoy the responsibility and working on teams of close-knit colleagues, and express deep pride in what they do,” the magazine said.
The magazine said Kiewit's average annual pay for an "engineer 1" position is $63,272. The company had 996 job openings and 164,048 applicants this month. Its workforce is 34 percent minorities and 11 percent women.
Kiewit is one of eight new companies on the list, which is topped by Google Inc. The list is compiled by Great Places to Work, a human resources consulting, research and training company, out of the 500 U.S. companies with the most annual revenue.
Fortune said Kiewit spends more than $60 million a year on training, six times the construction industry average, and includes on-the-job training in subjects from ethics and compliance to management and leadership.
Workers who take college courses are reimbursed up to $5,250 a year in tuition.
During their careers, they progress through five levels, from the “Kiewit Culture School” to the executive leadership development program, Fortune said.
Kiewit said the company has been named one of the best places to work in Canada for the past three years.
“This confirms what our employees already know,” said Kiewit CEO Bruce Grewcock. “Not only is Kiewit one of the best companies to work for in construction, mining and engineering, it's also one of the best across all industries in North America.”
