LINCOLN – University of Nebraska President J.B. Milliken will visit the White House Thursday for an event aimed at expanding higher education opportunities for low-income and other underrepresented students.
The event is hosted by President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. Participating institutions have been asked to submit new commitments that they will undertake to expand opportunities. Details on NU's commitments will be announced Thursday.
“The facts clearly demonstrate that Nebraska – and the United States – will need many more college graduates in the workforce in order to meet the economic demands of the future,” Milliken said. “We must ensure that college is accessible to every student who is qualified and wants to attend.”
Milliken was among six college presidents who participated last November in a similarly focused meeting hosted by Gene Sperling, the chief White House economics adviser.
