COUNCIL BLUFFS — Though January is regarded as the toughest month of the season, several top swimmers competing in Tuesday's double dual hosted by Council Bluffs Lewis Central produced plenty of solid performances.
Most of the swimmers from Lewis Central, Omaha Creighton Prep and Des Moines Dowling were racing in the midst of the most grueling workouts of the season.
The Junior Jays won their duals, defeating the Titans 118-52 and Dowling 104-66. The Maroons outscored Lewis Central 102-68.
“We are definitely in a tired and sore part of the season,” Prep coach Tom Beck said. “Even with that, we had some guys race really well. They took advantage of having some great competition from both Dowling and Lewis Central.”
four pool records fell at Lewis Central's Titan Hill Intermediate School, all to Prep swimmers. Senior Jacob Molacek set two of those by winning showdowns with Lewis Central senior R.J. Hemmingsen.
Molacek won the 100-yard butterfly in 49.57 seconds, with Hemmingsen right on his heels at 49.90. Molacek, an Auburn recruit, also won the 100 backstroke in 49.98. Hemmingsen was second in 52.54.
Molacek became just the third swimmer in state history to post a time under 50 seconds in the 100 back. He topped the previous pool standard of 53.18 by former Prep standout Will Raynor in 2010.
Hemmingsen is the defending Iowa state champion in the butterfly, and both of his times Tuesday were Lewis Central school records.
“R.J. was ready to go today,” Beck said. “He was on top of his game.”
Prep junior Ryan Tate took down the oldest pool record by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:45.44. The previous best was the 1:45.75 by Chris Reedy of Sioux City Heelan in 1985.
The Junior Jays' 200 freestyle relay team of Sean Tate, Collin Piti, Mike Bauwens and Carter Deras produced the fourth pool record by winning in 1:29.16.
