Doug Denson gets a little pep in his step when it comes to duals.
The Millard South coach may have skipped out of the gym Saturday afternoon following his team’s championship at the Millard West Invitational.
Denson’s No. 4 Patriots beat No. 5 Hastings 43-22 in the final dual to seal the title.
“Our kids have been scrapping pretty good,” Denson said. “Now that we’re getting into the real Class A schedule, we’re going to need that.”
After a Hastings win at 160 cut the Tigers’ deficit to 12-10, Millard South ran off six straight wins and 28 points to put things out of reach.
Roger Faust (170 pounds), Anthony Cloyd (182), Grant Collins (190), Mark Tompsett (220), Terry Jeub (285) and Nathan Rodriguez (106) got wins in the run.
Cloyd and Tompsett earned pins, Jeub won by forfeit and Rodriguez won by major decision.
“Those are the kind of bonus points we look for,” Denson said. “If you end a dual with seven wins and seven losses, it obviously comes down to that.”
Millard South went 5-0 on the day to win the Gold Bracket. The Patriots and Tigers each beat defending Class A dual champion Omaha Burke in the top grouping.
Denson said his team is getting to a place he likes heading into next week’s Metro tournament.
“To this point we’ve just been wrestling,” he said. “Going out there and trying to get better. We’ve got some pieces that could come together to make a run next week. We’ve just got to focus on taking care of the things we can control.”
