Prep, Wildcats win choppy meet

In a swimming meet full of false starts and disqualifications, Omaha Creighton Prep’s boys and Millard West’s girls were the champions Saturday at the Larry Hill Ralston Ram Relays.

Prep won six events and touched first in a seventh, but the Junior Jays were disqualified for a false start.

There were 24 disqualifications — 15 in the boys competition and nine in the girls meet — but the girls meet was impacted more. Among the DQs with the most impact were Omaha Westside in the 800 free relay, Omaha Marian and Lincoln Southeast in the 200 butterfly relay, Southeast in the 400 medley relay and Papillion-La Vista/Papillion-La Vista South in the 400 (8x50) free relay.

Staying penalty-free is what helped the Wildcats edge Marian 262-252. Four other schools were within 26 points of the Crusaders — Westside (240), Lincoln East (238), Papillion (236) and Millard North (226).

Prep outscored Millard West 314-280 for the boys title.

The most noteworthy performance came at the start of the boys 400 free relay won by Prep. Jacob Molacek led off for the Junior Jays by finishing his 100 yards in 44.75 seconds.

It was the Auburn recruit’s best 100 freestyle time in a high school meet and solidifies his No. 2 all-time spot on The World-Herald charts in that event. First is a 44.51 by Ryan Miksch of Columbus.

“All of Jacob’s times today were extremely good,” Prep coach Tom Beck said. “Overall we had some good high points, but we weren’t as close to 100 percent on those like we did last weekend.”

The Junior Jays posted several season-best times at a meet in Minneapolis. Saturday, Molacek also anchored Prep’s winning 200 freestyle in 19.57 (compared with 19.46 last weekend) and led off the 200 breaststroke relay in 24.95.

Prep bettered meet records in all three of those events.

Millard West’s girls won four relays. Seniors Shea Marcinski and Katherine McGinn, junior Tara Goss and sophomore Lindsey Stalheim all were on three of those relays.

The Wildcats won the 800 free relay (8:07.26), 400 free relay (3:50.95), 200 backstroke relay (1:52.89) and the 400 medley relay (4:10.64).
