The Nebraska Humane Society asked Sunday that pet owners keep their pets inside during this dangerously cold period.
If dogs are forced to spend time outside, the Humane Society said:
— Doghouses should be solid, wooden structures, with a flap over the entrance.
— A decent amount of hay or straw should be inside the doghouse. Do not use towels and blankets, because they become wet and moldy when the temperatures rise.
— Dogs need access to water, even in the cold. Heated dog bowls should be used. Food frequently freezes in cold weather, too.
If an animal appears to be in distress, call the Nebraska Humane Society at 402-444-7800., Ext. 1.
