Exeter-Milligan girls fall to Tekamah-Herman

MALCOLM - The Exeter-Milligan girls had a slim lead early, edging in front of Tekamah-Herman 11-8 after one, but couldn't hold on in Malcolm Winter tourney action Friday night.

The Exeter Milligan girls (4-3) meet Centennial in the consolation game today at 3 p.m. The Tigers of T-H move on to play host Malcolm in the championship game at 6:30 p.m.

The T-Wolves got a layup off the break from Maitlyn Thomsen to draw within a point early at 7-6 Tigers. Marissa Howard, a 5-7 E-M sophomore, scored on dribble penetration a heartbeat before the first horn to put her squad up 11-8.

In the second Howard did it again, stealing the ball and draining the ensuing layup to keep the Wolves within striking distance down three, 16-13 at intermission.

It was the hat trick for Howard in the third when, at 4:20, she pilfered the ball and converted on the E-M end to keep it a three-point game, 20-17 Tigers. The difference this time? She drew a foul and hit the plus-one, too.

Amber Pribyl hit a hard-fought hoop in heavy traffic deep in the paint and the third period ended 25-20.

The count favored T-H with 3:00 to play, 31-25, but things got very interesting when, at 2:10, Logan Zeleny flushed a trey right when E-M needed it most, 34-28.

Then - BOOM! - a three from Madison Horne, a 5-5 junior, brought the house down near the 1:00 mark to make it suddenly 34-31.

The Tigers called a hasty timeout. Zeleny hit another trey with 18 ticks left on the clock, but T-H prevailed on clutch 4-for-4 free throw shooting by calm, collected freshman Jessica Fleishman in the final half-minute. It was enough to hold the T-Wolves at bay.

Howard led scoring for E-M with nine points to which Zeleny and Thomsen added eight apiece. Scoring four, three and two were Amber Pribyl, Horne and Sydney Hall.

The Tigers were paced by Cheyanne Jessen and Fleischman with 10 each.
