Cross County comeback falls short; Cougars fourth in Sandy Creek

SANDY CREEK – The Cross County Cougars dug themselves an early hole as they fell behind the Central City Bison in the third place game on Monday at the Sandy Creek Holiday Tournament.

Central City (5-3) took a 10-8 lead after the first quarter, opened the margin to 19-12 at the half, then held off the Cougars 34-33 to capture the third place hardware.

Cross County cut the lead to just two points at 26-24 entering the fourth quarter, and continued to shave points off the Bison lead, but came up one point short.

The Cougars had a rough time from the field as they hit only 12-45 shots for just 27 percent, but knocked down 4-12 3-point shots for 33 percent.

Cross County went to the line for 11 free throws and hit five.

The scoring was led by senior Megan Pallas who scored seven, Taylor Nienhueser added six on two 3-point shots, Michelle Klein chipped in with five, while Naomi Kerwood and Jenni Pallas had four points each.

Central City’s Val Fousek led all the scoring with 13 points, Jill Gathje added nine and Amber Erickson four.

The Cougars were charted with 18 rebounds led by Megan Pallas with six.

Cross County (4-5) will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 7 when it hosts Osceola in Crossroads regular season action.
