Man. All those years of watching “Jeopardy!” and my team couldn't even make one of the top five scores at League Trivia night at the Glo Lounge. It's OK, though. The wise man knows he is a fool, right?
But then, League Trivia is no “Jeopardy!” First, there's beer. And you can sit down and play as a team. Order some apps if you want. Oh, and no worries about answering in the form of a question.
You'll find trivia opportunities Sunday through Thursday nights all over town — not just at Glo. We just chose it because you can't beat that picture window view of Midtown Crossing's holiday lights. It's worth it to get there a little early to nab a window seat.
No matter where you play, the rules are the same. Show up with your smart little crew (2 to 6 people per team is typical), choose a team name (preferably a hilarious one) and check in with the emcee to get your answer sheets and make your scoring official.
There are no little, blue Buzztime Internet trivia consoles to be had, but rather a live emcee who will start by running through the rules, then reading the first of 20 questions. Question categories include a range of knowledge bases: history, sports, pop culture, geography, science — and all with a good balance of ease versus difficulty.
You'll have the length of one song to confer with your team and deposit your response into the jar o' answers. The song may sound loud to sensitive ears, but it's supposed to be. You gotta drown out neighbors' murmurs, for the sake of healthy competition. And, to further curb cheating, no cellphones are allowed, making the night a refreshing break from our network-tethered existence.
Post-song, the emcee announces the correct response, to which some teams cheer, others groan and individuals insist, “Gawd! I TOLD you so!” After tallying points, the top three finishers win prizes — gift cards or menu items from the host location.
The game is free to play, but since it takes place at bars/restaurants, polite patrons eat, drink and leave a nice tip for the person who cleaned up their saucy napkins and beer slosh for two hours.
Glo Lounge was a fine choice for trivia night. It's comfy and cozy in there, with bar, couch and table seating to match your mood. The drink menu offers fun selections. We enjoyed an adult root beer float, concocted with vanilla vodka, root beer schnapps and Pepsi. And we couldn't turn down the dramatically named Bloody Shamus — a Bloody Mary fizzed up with Guinness.
A full menu is available, but tater tot nachos were the clear hit among tables, including ours. We continued with low culture cuisine by indulging in the funnel cake fries, served with chocolate and caramel sauce. You can even get the downstairs movie theater's popcorn and candy concessions if you want, which I thought was a nice touch.
If you're super-serious about your trivia, teams can join the official league at AmericasPubQuiz.com. This ups the stakes to include three seasons of trivia, cash prizes and even a tournament of champions — so there's something “Jeopardy!”-esque for you!
The smartest thing you can do is to be smart about choosing your team. You don't necessarily want like-minded individuals. Strategically, get a sports nut, a media geek, a history buff and a science type.
Boom! You've got someone to run every category, Alex.
