Mavs jump in front early, beat Broncs

WICHITA, Kan. — UNO picked up its third straight win with a 73-61 victory Saturday over Texas-Pan American at the Wichita State Winter Classic.

The Mavericks (6-5) jumped to a 17-7 lead behind Felicia Anderson's back-to-back 3-pointers, and the Broncs got no closer than five points the rest of the game.

The win was UNO's first this season away from Sapp Fieldhouse.

UNO senior guard Ericka House had a game-high 21 points, and freshman Madi Robson of Ankeny, Iowa, added a career-high 14 points, six assists and four rebounds.

The Mavs' Taijhe Kelly, a 6-foot-4 junior, had 12 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. She also blocked four shots.

UNO shot 51.7 percent (30 of 58) from the floor and hit 8 of 21 (38.1 percent) from 3-point range. House and Anderson each had three treys.

UTPA (6-5) made 8 of 33 attempts (24.2 percent) from 3-point range. UNO also outrebounded the Broncs 41-33. UNO was particularly dominant on the boards in the first half, building a 25-13 rebounding advantage and pulling down eight offensive boards. UNO led 30-22 at halftime.

UTPA cut the lead to 37-32 early in the second half, but the Mavs pushed the lead to 60-44 after Kelly hit consecutive layups and Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer.

UTPA reeled off a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to get back within 60-51 at the 6:02 mark. Out of a timeout, Robson scored to push the lead back to 11. After a free throw by UTPA's Brittany Bush, House scored from the baseline to make it 64-52.

The Broncs made one last push when they cut the deficit to 64-56 with 2:40 to go, but Robson hit a 3 and, after a steal by Lanese Bough, Robson scored again for a 69-56 lead with 1:31 remaining.

UNO continues play at the tournament at noon Sunday against Austin Peay.
