Though our thermometers tell us winter settled in several weeks ago, Saturday marks the official start of the season. This weekend also ushers in the end of Peak Performance's running event season.
The Holiday Hustle 5K – the Omaha running store's eighth and final race of 2013 – is Sunday in La Vista.
“As long as it's not snowing or the wind's not blowing, it should be OK,” race director Mike Ewoldt said.
The forecast doesn't call for snow. The high is 17 degrees, according to AccuWeather Inc., The World-Herald's weather consultant.
Organizers expect close to 150 people at the 4 p.m. race, though registration allows up to 500 runners to sign up. Each participant will receive either a Santa hat or elf ears. There will be a costume contest and prizes for the winners.
“We've seen people dressed up as the Three Wise Men. We've seen people dressed up as Christmas packages,” Ewoldt said. “Who knows what we're going to see.”
The start line is outside of Lucky Bucket Brewery in La Vista. The brewery will also host the after party. Pizza, soda and adult beverages are included in the race fee.
Online registration is $30 and closes Friday. You can also sign up for $35 at packet pick-up at Peak Performance, near 78th and Cass Streets, or on race day starting at 2:30 p.m. at Lucky Bucket at 11941 Centennial Road.
