“American Idol” isn't back on TV until Jan. 15, but Omaha is getting a one-two punch of former contestants starting this week.
Omaha native Tim Halperin, who made it to the show's top 24 in 2011, will bring his full band to his fifth annual Slowdown concert on Sunday.
The 2006 Omaha Westside grad has released two albums since his stint on the show: “Rise & Fall” and “Under That Christmas Spell.” He has played in Omaha several times, including the End of Summer Concert Series this year in Turner Park.
“It was a total dream (to be on the show), but it was like I need to take this with me and use it,” he said in 2011. “After it was over, it was, like, 'OK, what's next?' ”
Hot on Halperin's heels will be David Cook, who won the seventh season of “Idol.”
Cook, who had his first audition for the show in Omaha in 2007, will play The Waiting Room Lounge on Jan. 5. Tickets to that show are $20 in advance, $25 day of show.
Once “Idol” is back, we may see a few Omahans getting their golden tickets: The show held auditions here in August.
