12 Days of Cookies, day 3: Chocolate Malted Cookies

You may want a malted milkshake to wash these down on the third day of The World-Herald's 12 Days of Cookies.

Julie Kaminski submitted this recipe for Chocolate Malted Cookies. “These are decadent chocolate cookies with a hint of malt,” she said. “They are a fun change of pace for your holiday platter!”

INGREDIENTS

For the cookies:

• cup butter, softened
• cup shortening
• cup powdered sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 2 cups flour
• cup cocoa
• 1 cup mini chocolate chips

For the topping:

• 1 cup powdered sugar
• cup malt powder

OR

• Chocolate chips, melted

INSTRUCTIONS

Beat butter, shortening, powdered sugar and vanilla on high. Add flour and cocoa until mixed. Add chocolate chips. Chill 1 hour, then roll into balls. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool 5 minutes. Roll the balls in one of two toppings: powdered sugar combined with malted milk powder or melted chocolate chips.

Test kitchen notes: These don't have a strong malt flavor, but the hint of it makes them fun. Most tasters preferred the balls dipped in chocolate, but I really liked the powdered sugar option. They are very rich, so have that glass of milk ready. — Staff writer Sara Ziegler
