A husband and wife were in Dodge County Court on Tuesday on charges of animal cruelty after authorities found dead dogs, cats, horses and goats on their property.
Roland E. Peterson, 53, and Lori L. Peterson, 48, are each charged with four counts of felony animal cruelty. Dodge County Judge Kenneth Vampola set a preliminary trial date of Jan. 14.
A Dodge County sheriff's deputy filed arrest warrants for the pair on Nov. 21 after investigating a complaint of animal abuse. According to the warrants, deputies found and photographed more than 30 animals in various stages of decay at 280 County Road 2 in rural Dodge County. Animal remains were found inside and outside the residence, the warrant said.
The deputy who filed the warrant wrote “that it appears obvious that the deceased animals were intentionally and recklessly abandoned.” The deputy also said the Petersons admitted in an interview that the animals belonged to them.
If convicted, the Petersons face up to five years in prison for each charge.
