Perlman, Eichorst on Pelini's future: 'You'll know when we know'

LINCOLN — Short conversations with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor and NU’s athletic director yielded no clear direction on the fate of Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini.

Within 30 minutes after the Huskers’ 38-17 loss to Iowa on Friday, neither UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman nor Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst had any new announcements on Pelini’s future.

Eichorst stuck to what he has said in the past: He will not make any comments on the job status of any coach during the season.

When asked if he considered the end of the season to be after the Iowa game or after the Huskers’ bowl game, Eichorst would not say.

“I’m going to stick by the comments that I’ve already issued,” Eichorst said. “I won’t be making any comments until the season is over.”

Eichorst deflected a second phrasing of that question during a walk through the North Stadium concourse.

Eichorst got some unsolicited input from fans on a ride down a service elevator that picked him up from his skybox suite.

Four fans who didn’t know that Eichorst was on the elevator asked a reporter what he thought should be done, then offered their own opinions. One said Pelini should stay. Another indicated he thought the setback to the Hawkeyes was the final straw.

When it was pointed out that Eichorst was in the elevator, one fan became guarded in his comments as his three friends encouraged him to not talk so much.

Eichorst laughed when asked about that conversation in his presence and said it didn’t bother him.

Perlman watched some of Pelini’s press conference from his skybox. When he came out a few minutes later, he said no meetings were planned with Eichorst or Pelini to discuss Pelini’s job status.

“That’s Shawn’s call,” Perlman said. “You’ll know when we know.”
