Schaben earns spot on Elite All-State squad

It's difficult to imagine a better junior season of volleyball than the one Harlan Community's Jess Schaben just completed.

The 6-foot-2 Iowa State pledge led Class 4-A in total kills (573), kill efficiency (.456) and kills per set (5.51), helping the Cyclones to their first state championship in the sport. She was named captain of the all-tournament team after slamming 31 kills in the finals.

Schaben on Wednesday earned more honors. She's a member of the eight-member, all-class Elite All-State Team selected by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, and is the Class 4-A player of the year. Harlan coach Angie Spangenberg is the 4-A coach of the year.

Four of the other elite team members are repeat selections: Dike-New Hartford juniors Briana Weber and Rachel Koop, MOC-Floyd Valley senior Alexis Conaway and Fort Madison Holy Trinity junior Mikaela Foecke, who was named the overall state player of the year. Conaway will be Schaben's teammate at Iowa State, while Weber and Koop will play at Northern Iowa and Foecke will play at Nebraska. Weber is a three-time elite selection, having made the squad as a freshman.

Schaben becomes a three-time first-team all-state choice in 4-A.

Three others from The World-Herald's western Iowa coverage area earned first-team all-state honors: Stanton senior Carmen Subbert in 1-A, Carroll Kuemper senior Claire Ludwig in 3-A and Red Oak junior Kate Walker in 3-A. Subbert becomes a two-time first-team selection after making the second unit as a sophomore. Walker moves up from last year's third team in 3-A.

Six WI athletes earned second-team all-state recognition: Council Bluffs Lewis Central's Reghan Coyle and Harlan teammates Kenzie Swanson and Asia Kloewer in 4-A; Clarinda's Darcy Sunderman in 3-A; and Council Bluffs St. Albert's Kylie Ferguson and Treynor's Gracie Myers in 2-A. Ferguson moves up from last year's third team.

Three others earned third-team laurels: Clarinda senior Jenny Bair and Carroll Kuemper senior Karla Knobbe in 3-A, along with IKM-Manning junior Katelyn Schechinger in 2-A.

The IGCA also released its all-district teams on Wednesday.
