Starting Tuesday, the Heartland of America Park's recycling drop-off site will accept glass bottles and jars from downtown Omaha businesses and residents.
Ripple Glass will deliver a new glass recycling container to the drop-off site, which also collects other recyclables, at Eighth Street and Riverfront Drive.
The Omaha Downtown Improvement District Association has maintained the drop-off site since 2009. Glass wasn't accepted in the past because it was difficult to process, officials said.
All colors of glass bottles and jars will be recycled, and labels do not have to be removed. The glass items do not need to be rinsed before recycling.
The glass will be taken to Kansas City, Mo., where Ripple Glass cleans and processes glass for recycling. Ripple sends brown glass to a plant in Oklahoma for making beer bottles. Other colors are made into finely ground cullet used in insulation.
