The Nebraska Community College Association honored a Northeast Community College alumnus last week for outstanding career achievement.
Karl Hensley of Elgin, Neb., was given the Northeast Community College Area Distinguished Alumni Award during the organization's annual meeting, the college said.
“As we look into the future of agriculture, things are changing and evolving quickly, and Mr. Hensley has pushed Northeast Community College ag faculty to evaluate and improve the curriculum to meet the needs of students as well as business and industry,” Hilary Maricle, associate dean of agriculture, math and science at Northeast, wrote in a press release.
Hensley graduated from Northeast Technical Community College in Norfolk with an associate of applied science degree in agri-business.
Buffett Institute executive to speak at UNL forum
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will hold a symposium today at the East Union on the merits and implications of testing young children.
Samuel J. Meisels, executive director of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska, will be the keynote presenter at the Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education.
“Tested Before Their Time? Accountability and Early Learning” will focus on how best to assess the growth and development of young children and the programs and professionals who serve them, according to a press release from UNL. His presentation from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. will be followed by breakout sessions from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

UNO aviation team heads to nationals for 5th year
The University of Nebraska at Omaha's student aviation team will compete nationally for the fifth straight year.
The Flying Mavs team took second in its region at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association contest this month in Oklahoma City, according to UNO.
Team members have also finished in the top three six times in individual competitions.
The national competition, SAFECON, will be held May 12-17, 2014, in Columbus, Ohio.
