Temperatures are forecast to drop to around 12 degrees in Omaha tonight, and plumber Scott Sherman has a suggestion on how to avoid headaches that could result from burst pipes.
Disconnect your garden hose from the faucet.
Sherman, owner of Sherman Plumbing Inc., said that if you don't physically disconnect the hose, water inside the hose can drain back into the pipe and cause it to burst.
The cold continues through Tuesday night. By Wednesday, temperatures will gradually begin rebounding.
Tonight: The commute should be cold – 26 degrees and a wind chill of about 15.
Overnight lows will dip into the mid-teens, with wind gusting to 20 mph.
Tuesday: Sunny and cold. The morning low of 14 degrees probably will occur about 3 a.m. and temperatures will be slow to warm. By 9 a.m., the temperature might be 17 degrees and feel like 12. The daytime high, occurring in midafternoon, is forecast at 33 degrees.
A low of 20 degrees is forecast overnight.
Wednesday through the weekend: Temperatures gradually warm, with daytime highs in the 40s on Wednesday and Thursday, and highs in the 50s on Friday through Sunday.
A chance of rain moves into the area on Thursday into the weekend.
