Wayne rallies for subdistrict victory

OAKLAND - Wayne rallied from a 1-1 tie after two sets to seal a 3-1 win against Wisner-Pilger in the Class C1-7 Subdistrict final at Oakland Tuesday night in its bid to qualify for the State Volleyball Tournament.

Wayne, which reached the subdistrict final after defeating West Point-Beemer 3-2 Monday, relied on a balanced hitting attack featuring four hitters in double figures - Madison Frevert with 13, Paige Wacker and Ashton Schweers with 11 each and Alyssa Schmale with 10.

The match served as both teams' third meeting this season and pitted Wayne coach Traci Krusemark against Jean Groth, her former high school coach and head coach when Krusemark served as an assistant.

Both teams kept the first set close, exchanging leads until Wayne went on a 7-0 run to hold a 22-15 lead on a Madison Frevert block, two Ashton Schweers kills and two Gator hitting errors. A Megan Springer block and kill, two kills by Makenzie Kalkowski and Sara Smyth and a Blue Devil serving error pulled the Gators to within three at 24-21. But Whitney Hanson's long hit gave Wayne the 25-21 win.

Wisner-Pilger, which advanced to Tuesday's final with a 3-1 win vs. Tekamah-Herman, erased Wayne's 7-3 lead in the second set on four Springer kills and maintained that lead throughout the set. The Gators relied on kills by Springer, Bailey Batenkorst and Kalkowski and held off the Blue Devils, which came within two several times on Schweers and Frevert kills and some W-P hitting errors. A Kalkowski ace serve between two Wayne passers closed the second set 25-21.

The Gators took an early 7-4 lead in the third set, but the Blue Devils quickly erased it and led as much as 20-12 on a Frevert kill, Paige Wacker kills and block, Frevert and setter Emma Evetovich block and three aces by Frevert and Meagan Backer. Two Wacker kills gave Wayne the 25-16 win.

Both teams kept the fourth set close as Wayne jumped to an early lead, despite a couple of hitting errors and a net call. Then the Gators tied it at 9 with Springer, Kalkowski, Batenhorst kills and Kalkowski and Shyann Pilger block, and fought to keep a slim lead. The Blue Devils regained momentum by tying at 17 and reclaiming the lead at 20-19 on Frevert, Schweers Wacker, Schmale and Jaci Jenkins kills. Two Frevert kills and a solo block of Kalkowski, Gator freeball error and a Schweers ace sealed the 25-19 win for Wayne.

Two Blue Devils recorded double-doubles, with Schweers' 11 kills and 22 digs and Schmale's 10 kills and 11 digs. Frevert led in blocks with six, followed by Evetovich with three. Evetovich had 40 set assists and libero Meagan Backer racked up 48 digs.

Megan Springer paced the Gators with a double-double on 19 kills and 10 digs. Bailey Batenhorst contributed 16 kills and led in blocks with two. Setters Makenzie Kalkowski and Mariha Schweers notched 24 and 23 set assists, respectively, and Kalkowski and Sydney Bradfield added seven and five kills. Libero Jenni Lueschen contributed 15 digs.

Wayne, 25-6, advances to a district final that will be announced Wednesday, while Wisner-Pilger wraps its season at 26-8.
