Not everybody is into the pie baking and turkey basting that goes with Thanksgiving. Some people just want to dine out.
If your restaurant is open on Thanksgiving, send us the details so we can compile a list for those non-turkey eaters. Give us your Thanksgiving hours, special menu items you will serve, pricing information and anything else diners might want to know. We’ll run the list in the coming weeks and keep it updated on Omaha.com. Email information to Sarah Baker Hansen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Bakers on hand to relieve your pie panic
If you’re like me and break into a cold sweat at the thought of pie crust, fear not. The Crisco helpline is here to hold your hand through the holiday season.
The hotline has been helping bakers on the road to pie perfection for eight years. The number to call is 1-877-FOR-PIE-TIPS 1-877-367-7438.
Live pie experts can be reached from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. During the harried holiday season when pie baking is at its peak, live pie experts are on-call during extended hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday Nov. 18 to 27, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 16 to 23. Recorded tips and tricks can be accessed 24 hours a day.
At Crisco.com, bakers can find plenty of sweet pie recipes along with some unusual ones, including a mini bacon and leek quiche designed for entertaining and savory pumpkin Parmesan empańadas. Award winning pie expert and author Michele Stewart will offer tutorials and recipes on the site during November.
Favorite new app: Bon Appetit guide to Thanksgiving
In other Thanksgiving news, I’m really excited about a Thanksgiving-centric iPad app I downloaded last week. The “Thanksgiving: A Bon Appetit Manual” is free to download and includes loads of recipes for both traditional and contemporary takes on Thanksgiving. Videos show the amateur how to butcher a turkey or the best way to brine a bird. Interesting sides — classic peas and onions or winter squash with spiced butter — are next to more modern takes, like kabocha puree with ginger. It’s simple, beautiful holiday menu planning at its finest. Find it in the App store, or read more about it at Bonappetit.com.
