WOOD RIVER. Neb. — One person was killed and one woman was seriously injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near the Wood River exit Wednesday night.
Hall County Sheriff Jerry Watson described the crash scene as a “very bad accident.”
One person died on the scene. Hall County Attorney Mark Young, who also acts as the county coroner, was called to the crash site. The accident occurred sometime after 7 p.m.
According to a preliminary investigation, an eastbound passenger vehicle was forced into the median by a semitrailer truck that was changing lanes, Watson said. The smaller vehicle then veered into the westbound lanes, where it was struck by a different semi, he said.
He was unsure how many people were in the passenger vehicle. He also didn’t know how many people were injured. He did say there was one woman who was in “real serious condition.” She was taken to St. Francis Medical Center by ambulance.
The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for several hours following the crash and traffic was rerouted.
The Nebraska State Patrol assisted at the scene and Watson said there were multiple ambulances called as well.
