Omaha Zombie Walk tonight in Benson

What started in 2008 as a modest cluster of 171 zombies has grown into a full-on horde.

At last year's Omaha Zombie Walk, nearly 3,000 walking dead, running victims and zombie resistance soldiers took over downtown Benson. This year's walk, its sixth annual, is expected to be at least as big.

“The original zombie walk was a flash mob,” said Steve “Tuco” Jacobs, founder and lead organizer of the Omaha Zombie Walk. “Now, it's more of a parade.”

Lore has it that the very first zombie walk took place in 2001, with six zombies shuffling around Toronto and presumably freaking out a bunch of nice Canadians. The craze has since infected cities big and small all over the world. Lincoln has a zombie walk. So does Council Bluffs, Kearney and Wayne, Neb., the last of which had to postpone this year's due to severe weather.

Each year, the Omaha Zombie Walk adds a different theme. This year it's Viking Zombies.

Zombies aren't required to attend as viking zombies. Just encouraged.

Following the zombie walk, Waiting Room will hold a Zombie Ball and costume contest (separate contests for viking zombies and regular zombies). There will also be a Zombikini contest, which is what it sounds like.

All proceeds from the event will got to the Siena/Francis House.
