IOWA CITY (AP) — Leaders of Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa are ready to break ground on a new education center aimed at preparing students for careers in STEM fields.
A ceremonial groundbreaking is scheduled this afternoon for the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa Research Park in Coralville.
College and university officials say the center will mark an unusual partnership between their institutions that will expand access to higher education for area high school students and adults. The center, scheduled to open by fall 2015, will offer classes in science, technology, engineering, math and other fields aimed at providing career options for students.
The center will also give the university's education students and professors a place to try out cutting-edge teaching strategies.
