Husker fever, lederhosen style

Justin Klish admits he's crazy about Nebraska football.

That's why he carried a Husker flag — and a pair of red corduroy pants — across Europe on a recent backpacking trip.

Even though he and buddy Jordan Pfeffer were thousands of miles away, they still wanted to feel a part of the excitement.

“I packed a flag with me to take random pictures,'' he said. “I always forgot to take it out.''

The corduroy pants never saw the light of day — they were too warm and are good really only for that one Husker football game he makes it home for every year.

Instead, he and Pfeffer, who work for Mass. Electric Construction Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit, ended up in some lederhosen for one of their shots with the flag. That was when they were celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich.

Not your typical Husker garb, but Klish said they fit right in with the celebrating Germans.

They also got a shot of the flag in Budapest, overlooking the Danube River.

The 26-year-olds both went to Millard North before Klish transferred to Omaha Burke. They met up again at Nebraska.

Now, they're both business managers on construction job sites. Klish recently began working in Dallas while Pfeffer lives in Santa Monica, Calif.

Klish acknowledged that the best time to take a vacation probably wasn't during football season, but it worked out with their jobs.

They had planned to watch the UCLA and South Dakota State games on satellite TV but had no luck once they got to Europe. Plus, it was hard keeping track of the time since they were 12 hours ahead of Lincoln.

“We ended up touring the city since you are only there once,'' Klish said. “We'd just check our phones and the internet with SportsCenter.''
