WASHINGTON — Who wants to be a federal judge?
There will be an opening on the bench in Nebraska after U.S. District Judge Joseph Bataillon takes senior status just over a year from now.
Appointing his replacement falls to President Barack Obama, but the White House typically looks to a state's U.S. senators to recommend names.
Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., said Thursday that he looks forward to working with Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., to find the right candidate.
Johanns said they will set up a more formalized process down the road, but encouraged those who are interested to go ahead and contact him or Fischer in the meantime.
Johanns said he's looking for “a great jurist” and indicated he doesn't have anyone in mind already.
“It is wide open,” Johanns said. “Nobody has an inside track.”
