Go Big White? With today's expected heat, Husker fans advised to wear light-colored clothing

Husker fans have a new, preferred team color: white.

That's “white” as in wear light-≠colored clothing today to Memorial Stadium — the game will be held during the hottest time of a hot day, and conditions are likely to be more uncomfortable than last week's home opener.

Temperatures in Lincoln are likely to peak in the upper 90s and the heat index could range from 102 degrees to 104 degrees for the last half of the afternoon, said Dave Fobert, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Gates open at 3:30 p.m., and kickoff is at 5 p.m. At this time of year, the day's heat peaks at about 4 p.m.

Conditions probably won't be much more tolerable until sunset, about 8 p.m., Fobert said.

Whether Lincoln is as uncomfortable as that depends upon a weak front that's projected to move into the area. If it tracks as expected, atmospheric moisture is likely to pool in the Lincoln area this afternoon, which would help push the heat index toward 104 degrees.

The average high this time of year is in the low 80s.

Because of the heat, the University of Nebraska is allowing each fan to bring along two 20-ounce clear plastic bottles of water.

Susan Epps, executive director of the Cornhusker chapter of the American Red Cross, said it was clear that fans paid attention to the weather last week. She saw more fans wearing white, and the Red Cross treated fewer alcohol-related medical cases.

“Now, if they can do it for one more week,” she said.

The hot weather is expected to last through Monday, Fobert said.

A stronger front coming through Tuesday is expected to bring a chance of rain and cooler weather, Fobert said.
