Omaha Community Foundation awards $123 million in grants, a single-year record

The Omaha Community Foundation distributed more than $123 million in grants to area nonprofits in 2012.

According to a foundation announcement, that total marked the most ever awarded during a single year in the organization’s 31-year history.

It also landed the foundation on several lists compiled by the Council on Foundations, a membership association of grant-making institutions.

Among 300 surveyed organizations, the Omaha Community Foundation ranked as the ninth “most active” grant maker. The list considered total amount of grants awarded in 2012 in proportion to the foundation’s assets.

With assets in excess of $654 million, the foundation ranked as the country’s 23rd largest community foundation.

It also ranked 14th in “activity volume,” which looked at how much money was given to and given by the foundation, and 19th in gifts per capita.

Created in 1982, the Omaha Community Foundation serves to connect donors with area nonprofits and to promote philanthropy.

In May, the foundation hosted its first Omaha Gives! charitable challenge, a 24-hour online campaign that raised more than $3 million for 318 nonprofits.

To date, the foundation has distributed more than $906 million in grants.
