Omaha City Councilman Garry Gernandt is back at work, days after suffering a heart attack.
“Glad to be here,” the South Omaha representative replied during roll call at Tuesday’s council meeting.
Council members celebrated Gernandt’s return during the council’s morning briefing.
Gernandt, 67, said, “My whole life passed in front of me with this health crisis I had.” His voice has weakened slightly, a condition that his doctor told him to expect.
Gernandt suffered a heart attack last Wednesday at Spring Lake Park. It was caused, he said, by a blockage in a small artery.
Gernandt thanked colleagues and residents for their good wishes. “I’m back at work,” he said. “It feels good.”
