Jerry Riibe, the chief operating officer of Building Bright Futures, has accepted a job with an Iowa school district.
The Muscatine school board announced Friday that Riibe is its district's new superintendent of schools. Riibe will begin in the new position July 1.
The Muscatine Community School District enrolls about 5,500 students and is located in eastern Iowa, along the Mississippi River.
Building Bright Futures is an Omaha-based educational nonprofit organization focused on raising achievement levels across the metro area, especially for students living in poverty.
Riibe, 56, said Muscatine has a strong community spirit and has experienced rising poverty that will challenge the schools.
He said he has “nothing but positive things to say” about Building Bright Futures.
“That board is highly committed to do its best to level the playing field for kids in poverty,” he said.
John Cavanaugh, executive director of Building Bright Futures, said that he expects the organization's governing board to act quickly to replace Riibe and that programs should continue unaffected.
