After Omaha Gives! $41k more for 12 Omaha nonprofits

A good week just got even better for 12 area nonprofits. On Friday afternoon, the Omaha Community Foundation announced the winners of $41,000 in participation prizes following Wednesday's Omaha Gives! charitable challenge.

The first-time event raised $3,075,643.57 for 319 nonprofit groups, organizers say.

The additional prize money, provided by American National Bank, rewards the groups that attracted the greatest number of unique donors.

Competing nonprofits were divided into two categories, large and small, based on operating budget size.

The Nebraska Humane Society took the $10,000 top prize among large organizations, followed by Food Bank for the Heartland ($5,000), Maha Music Festival ($2,500), the Open Door Mission ($1,000), Mercy High School ($1,000) and the Siena/Francis House ($1,000).

Among small organizations, Chabad Lubavitch of Nebraska won the $10,000 prize, followed by Hear Nebraska ($5,000), Nebraska Wildlife Rehab ($2,500), The Union for Contemporary Art ($1,000), Omaha Girls Rock ($1,000) and the Literacy Center ($1,000).

Overall, the 24-hour Omaha Gives! event generated more than 19,000 individual gifts of at least $10.
