'American Idol' auditions coming to Omaha in August

“American Idol” hasn't yet decided on a 12th winner, but the show is already beginning the search for the 13th.

And the search will include auditions in Omaha.

Omaha is one of six cities that will hold auditions for the 13th season of “American Idol,” the talent show that has spawned artists including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Daughtry.

On Aug. 11, auditions will be held at CenturyLink Center Omaha.

Other cities for auditions are San Francisco, Detroit, Atlanta, Boston and Austin, Texas. Those that can't make it to the audition cities can also take part in an online audition beginning Thursday after the Season 12 finale.

The auditions return to Omaha, where they took place in 2007. The show had a great experience with Omaha, said Kristi Andersen, spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, which runs the CenturyLink Center.

"They like to move the audition locations around the country but we continued to stay in contact with them over the past several years. We’re excited that we were able to convince them to come back to Omaha this summer," she said.

Back in 2007, one of the Omaha auditioners went on to win. David Cook of Blue Springs, Mo., attended the auditions to support his brother, but sang for the judges anyway. Cook ended up winning the seventh season of the show and his major-label debut was certified platinum.

The auditions drew thousands of people and about 8,000 of them auditioned for low-level producers. The field was winnowed to several hundred, and only a handful of them auditioned for then-judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
