Five Omaha police officers who helped rescue two people struggling to stay afloat in Carter Lake were honored Thursday as 2012 Officers of the Year by the Omaha Police Foundation.
Nicholas Andrews, Jacob Bettin, Mark Kiley, Kelly Murphy and Bryant Wheatley demonstrated “great courage, composure and professionalism while protecting the community and saving the lives of its citizens,” the foundation, which raises funds for equipment and training, wrote in a statement.
The rescue occurred Nov. 18 after a small boat capsized. The officers swam to reach the boat and a flailing 55-year-old woman and her adult son, who were about 50 yards offshore.
The woman and man were treated for exposure and hypothermia.
CrimeStoppers will name an officer of the year Tuesday.
