Ottumwa, Iowa, hospital fires 30 workers

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — An Ottumwa hospital is firing 30 people as part of an effort that the center's CEO said was aimed at finding “the right number of people to do the job.”

Ottumwa Regional Health Center Chief Operating Officer Phil Dionne said the 30 people losing their jobs are from a variety of hospital departments.

Dionne noted that the people being fired represent a small percentage of the 785 people employed at the hospital.

Dionne said the decision came after a long look at staffing.

“We want to have the right number of people to do the job,” Dionne said. “You don't go into Menards or Burger King or McDonald's or Hy-Vee and see a lot of people sitting around and getting paid. They're doing something; they're there for a purpose, to meet the customer's needs. We have to right-size the organization to ensure we have the right number of people to maximize our resources.”

He said there is no chance the hospital will close, noting it's “very strong as an organization and continuing to grow.”

The hospital began working Thursday with employees losing their jobs to provide help finding other employment. The hospital will provide COBRA benefits for a limited time, which lets workers retain their health insurance coverage.

The layoffs follow a decision to close the hospital's day care operation, known as the Child Development Center. Parents were told this week the center would close May 24.
