Lunches may be changing in the Springfield Platteview School District.
The district is looking at hiring an outside company to prepare food. Bids on the proposal will be examined in late April.
Superintendent Brett Richards said the Elkhorn and Ralston districts have made similar moves in recent years with good results.
“You turn the program to an outside company to guarantee both quality and no loss of funds,” Richards said.
Richards said several things have led the district to look at options.
Kathy Kern, the district’s food service manager, is retiring soon. New government regulations mean changes on how the food is prepared and served.
Richards said this year the district wil probably lose $15,000 to $20,000 on food service. Hiring a company that knows the regulations and can manage the costs will help, he said.
Brad Dahl, the assistant superintendent for business with Ralston Public Schools, said outsourcing has been effective for Ralston.
About two years ago, the district outsourced its food preparation to Sodexo Food Services. “It has had a positive impact on our students, with a better product and a more efficient manner for the community,” he said.
