The Westside Community Schools have become the first school district in the country to win the Wellness Council of America's highest workplace wellness award.
Westside also becomes one of only 37 workplaces nationwide to win the Platinum Award. Two others will be given this year to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska and Nebraska Methodist College, said Rebecca Vinton Dorn, executive director of the Wellness Council of the Midlands.
The district's Westside Wellness program was introduced in 1982, when the school district became a founding member of WELCOM. The district has won five previous awards at different levels since that time.
The difference between the Platinum and other awards, Vinton Dorn said, is that the organizations that receive it are showing results, such as a return on investment or employee retention.
Overall participation in Westside's program is 66 percent. The district offers various programs throughout the year to promote physical, social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational and intellectual wellness, from a healthy breakfast club to money management. Each employee is offered a personal health assessment.
“They really are a model,” Vinton Dorn said.
