Omaha and Beer: A Love Story

Valentine's Day will come one day late this year for craft beer lovers across Omaha.

The second annual Omaha Beer Week begins Friday, and bars throughout the city will show their love for their customers with special brews, tap takeovers, beer-and-food pairings, a bus tour to various craft beer establishments, a beer festival and other events designed to increase awareness of the city's growing reputation as a craft beer town.

“We couldn't have done an Omaha Beer Week five years ago,” said Bill Baburek, owner of Crescent Moon Ale House at 36th and Farnam Streets — one of Omaha's first craft beer bars. Over the past few years, that's changed, said Baburek, who helped to originate Omaha Beer Week (which actually lasts 10 days) last year.

Jake's Cigars and Spirits opened in Benson about seven years ago as a smoke shop and began emphasizing craft beers a few years later.

Other craft bars have sprung up since, particularly in Benson, where Krug Park, Beercade and Jerry's Bar have all opened in the past 18 months.

Two breweries are slated to open in the neighborhood this year.

“In Benson alone there are like 200 taps,” Baburek said. While Benson seems to be the craft beer epicenter of Omaha, bars emphasizing craft beer have opened across the city, and existing bars have added craft beer options, he said. Drinkers have taken note, said Angela Arp, social media strategist at the Nebraska Brewing Co., 7474 Towne Center Parkway in Papillion, and one of the organizer's of Omaha Beer Week 2013 . However, many stick to neighborhood bars close to home, and to brews and breweries they've become familiar with.

She hopes that Beer Week's various events — some notable ones include a beer-and-raw-foods pairing and a derby car race using beer cans — nudge beer fans to broaden their beer and bar horizons. Among the week's highlights is a bus tour of 12 different craft beer bars, which will begin at noon on Saturday. The tour will allow beer fans to check out places they might not normally go and to try drinks they may have never had before without having to drive afterwards, she said.

Plus, spending a day on a bus with other beer fans is as good a way as any to meet like-minded drinkers, said Dustin Bushon, general manager of Krug Park and another organizer of the event.

“Beer is very communal,” he said.

Tap takeovers, beer dinners, and other events will take place throughout next week. Extreme Beer Fest, an annual festival sponsored by Crescent Moon, will kick off the second weekend of the event. For four hours on Feb. 23, ticket holders can sample craft beers from around the world — as well as from area home brew clubs — to their heart's content.

Sunday, Feb. 24, will feature Low-key events will be featured at bars across the city on Feb. 24 to help revelers recuperate from 9 days of drinking.

All together, more than 20 bars and breweries will participate in this year's event, which is up from 15 last year, Baburek said. Last year's events were hastily planned and executed, he said, but still well-attended. This year, craft beer bar owners and managers got serious, turning Omaha Beer Week into a non-profit, spending months coordinating, planning and designing the week. Mayor Jim Suttle even issued a proclamation, dubbing Friday Omaha Beer Day. Baburek expects that thousands of customers will participate throughout the 10-day event.

And he expects Omaha Beer Week will continue to grow.

Oregon, for example, has an entire beer month, with events throughout the state.

Perhaps someday, Baburek said, Nebraska will follow.

“That's extreme, obviously,” he said. “But, hey, you never know.”
